Check the inside first
Look for new ceiling stains, drips, damp carpet, bubbling paint, mould smell or water near electrical fittings.
If a ceiling is sagging or water is near power, keep clear and seek urgent help.
Check outside from ground level
From a safe position, look for missing tiles, lifted metal sheets, fallen branches, loose gutters, damaged downpipes, displaced ridge capping or debris in valleys.
Do not climb onto a wet or storm-damaged roof. The risk is not worth it.
Photograph what you can safely see
Photos of internal water entry, exterior roof damage, fallen branches and gutter overflow can help explain the problem.
If you may make an insurance claim, keep dates, times and photos for your records.
Decide how urgent the enquiry is
Active water entry, ceiling sagging, missing roof sections and storm debris impact should be treated as higher urgency.
If the issue is not actively leaking, still request help promptly because repeated rain can make small damage worse.
