Check the inside first
Look for new ceiling stains, drips, damp carpet, bubbling paint, mould smell or water near electrical fittings.
If a ceiling is sagging or water is near power, keep clear and seek urgent help.
Photograph safely
Take photos from the ground or inside the home only where safe. Useful images may include ceiling stains, fallen branches, broken tiles visible from the ground, gutter overflow or storm debris.
Do not climb onto a wet or storm-damaged roof for photos.
Keep dates and details
Record the date and approximate time of the storm, when you noticed the leak, and whether water is still entering.
If you contact an insurer, keep claim numbers, conversations and repair invoices together.
Separate make-safe from permanent repair
A temporary make-safe may reduce immediate water entry, but permanent repairs should still be scoped clearly.
Ask what work is temporary, what work is permanent, and what should be checked again after weather clears.
