Start with safety inside the home
Move people, pets and valuables away from the leak if it is safe to do so. If water is near lights, power points or appliances, avoid the area and treat it as an electrical risk.
If the ceiling is sagging or water is pooling above plasterboard, keep clear of the room. A wet ceiling can fail suddenly.
Capture useful details without climbing on the roof
Photos from inside the home, outside at ground level and any visible gutter overflow can be useful. Do not climb onto a wet, steep or storm-damaged roof.
Note when the leak appears: light rain, heavy rain, wind-driven rain, or after gutters overflow. This helps narrow down likely causes.
Common causes during heavy rain
